NEWS RELEASE
NHIA IMPROVES MOBILITY FOR SCHEMES
As part of its efforts to improve the means of transport for the National Health Insurance Schemes, particularly for those in rural districts, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has provided to some Schemes in the northern region 10 motorbikes and 40 bicycles costing GH¢35,000.
Forty schemes in the three Northern regions were beneficiaries of the “new transport.”
According to the Ag. Director of Procurement and Projects of NHIA, Mr. Sam Buabasah, it was the first batch of such means of transport that the Authority intends to provide to the schemes, in rural districts to enhance their mobility in their areas of operations
“The Authority is currently buying 64 bicycles and 42 motorbikes for the Northern regions to complement their transportation to the rural areas to register Ghanaians who are interested in the national health insurance,” he said.
This would also help the schemes to carry out their administrative duties more efficiently. It was always a problem when for instance a Scheme Manager had to attend a meeting and other officers had to go on official duties outside their immediate environs which required the use of the only vehicle available at the scheme.
The Authority had also observed that using the vehicles for short distance errands were expensive hence the availability of the motorbikes would go a long way to bring down the cost of running the schemes.
The Authority was determined to make it possible for the schemes to operate efficiently as a result this year it had planned to provide various resources including computers, photocopier machines and constructing regional offices for all the regions in Ghana among others.
All beneficiary schemes were cautioned to use the motorbikes and bicycles cautiously so that they could have a long life span.
