2011 ANNUAL REPORT  

A COMMUNIQUE' ISSUED TO H.E JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA 

On the 4th of September 2012, The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, issued a set of critical policy directions to be implemented up until the end of December 2012. Contained in the directives were the following:

·         The evaluation of the adequacy of the cost containment strategies of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA);

·         The production of a list of additional sources of funding for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS); and

·         An engagement of critical stakeholders for open consideration of options for the long-term sustainability of the NHIS, including a discussion of the One Time Premium Policy.

For this reason a stakeholders engagement meeting was organised on the 20th and 21st December, 2012 under the theme - Re-engineering the Financial Architecture of the NHIS at the La Palm Hotel in Accra. The meeting gathered experts from Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), the pharmaceutical council, economists, health administrators, medical practitioners, parliamentary sub-committee on health, Ministry of Health, National Development Planning Commission, World Health Organisation, subscribers and management of the NHIA to deliberate on the Sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme; and the Feasibility of the One Time Premium (1TP) Insurance Policy and was graced by H.E John Dramani Mahama, the President of the Republic of Ghana. At the end of the 2 day meeting, views of the participants on agreed options for sustainable healthcare in Ghana were collated and used to develop a communiqué that was delivered to facilitate a Cabinet meeting on the sustainability of the NHIS and the implementation of the 1TP.

The National Health Insurance Authority has held a forum for the media at the conference room of Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Briefing the media on the status of implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Mr Sylvester Mensah, alluded to the importance of the media in national discourses, debates and communication. He also briefed them on developments in the scheme, including a plethora of initiatives and achievement so far chalked, including the rising profile of the NHIS on the international stage where the scheme is emerging as a model for many countries in the Developing World and beyond.
